In the heart of Taraba State, a quiet revolution is taking place fueled by knowledge, community spirit, and the unwavering commitment of the SELL (Sharing Education and Learning for Life) Volunteers in Jalingo.

The recent visit to the Women Vocational Centre in Jalingo owned by the Infant Jesus Sisters, by the SELL Resource Team from Bauchi, revealed a powerful story of transformation, resilience, and environmental stewardship.

Upon arrival, the SELL team was warmly welcomed by the sister in charge of the Centre, who shared heartfelt reflections on the journey so far. She spoke of the Centre’s evolution, the challenges they’ve faced, and the invaluable support received from SELL Nigeria. Her words were filled with gratitude for the training and empowerment initiatives that have breathed new life into the Centre’s mission.

As the team toured the facility, guided by the sister on behalf of students currently on break, they were met with tangible proof of progress. Neatly stacked bags of briquette charcoal, vibrant garden beds, and rich compost piles stood as proud symbols of what training, when paired with passion, can achieve.

These smokeless briquettes produced from agricultural waste are more than just an innovation. They represent a sustainable alternative to firewood, helping to reduce deforestation and indoor air pollution. The compost and garden projects not only promote food security but also offer a dignified source of income for the women and students at the Centre.

This ripple effect began with SELL’s training of community volunteers, who then passed on their knowledge to the women at the Centre. It’s a model of empowerment that multiplies impact, building skills, confidence, and community resilience.

The story of the Women of Vocational Centre in Jalingo is a testament to what’s possible when education meets purpose. Through SELL’s support, these women are not only learning to sustain themselves, they are becoming stewards of their environment and champions of change in their community.

In a world that often overlooks grassroots efforts, the work happening in Jalingo is a shining example of how local action can drive global impact, one briquette, one garden, one empowered woman at a time.
