A Word from Malawi. 22 February 2022
At present it's about making contacts setting up the structures and buying the necessary equipment for the Resource Room. Here in Malawi the SELL Programme will work under the asepsis of a registered NGO called Ungweru which means Light.
So a word on Malawi. This country is know as ‘the warm heart of Africa’. People meeting you for the first time will often say welcome to the warm heart of Africa. It’s a lovely expression and in so many ways Malawi lives up to this nickname. Warm climate, warm welcoming people, and a huge warm natural lake that runs along a lot of the eastern part of the country. I am living in Mzuzu which is situated on a plateau in the north of the country. Being high up its got a very temperate climate being cool for a lot of the year. Should I want some more heat and a lake view I only have to drive a little over an hour to the east.
So Malawi feels like an easy country to live in with welcoming people and overall a pleasant climate. But, isn’t there always a but, sadly there are huge levels of poverty here. I am still trying to understand why this is so. There is a lot of fertile land, it may be that being a land locked country makes importing goods difficult and expensive. Why the government imposes such large import duty on items is a mystery to me. People do complain a lot about the integrity of their government, but then that can be said of most countries!
As a new arrival I’ve a lot to learn. At present I’m attempting to learn the Tumbuka language, I have never been great on languages and I’m struggling here again but with time I hope I’ll get a little freer with it. Since my arrival a lot of my time and energy has been spent on building a residence to live in and a resource room big enough to run the SELL programme from. Approximately 50,000 euro spent on all this most of it has been contributed by you all who support us.. By Feb / March I hope to have recruited two young folk who will work with Fr. Tommy and I. Tommy hopes to reach here in the spring time this year 2022. From then we will launch the SELL Programme proper and we will be letting you know how we get on.

SELL has landed in Malawi!

After a long wait Leo from the SELL Team has reached Malawi and begun work on setting up accommodation and a working space. He arrived on Sept 17th. It’s taken a few weeks to get settled and connected to the various stakeholders who will assist the establishment of the programme. He finds the people warm and welcoming and after the infrastructure is set up is hopeful of taking of in the communities from Jan 2022. Leo is so glad to be back in Africa after a long wait in Ireland. For him and SELL Malawi 2022 holds lots of hope as Tommy will join him and a new team gets formed to offer SELL as a supportive programme in the lives of young Malawians. Leo Thanks the SELL Resource Teams in Nigeria and Ghana for their prayers and encouragement. He looks forward to seeing all three teams network in support of each other.
