TRAINING

The SELL Hausa Facilitators training took place at the Youth Formation Centre, Bauchi on the 8th – 13th September 2015. Mr. Clement Mallam a SELL ally and the SELL Hausa Cordinator John Jiddere creatively facilitated the process; using much Hausa Proverbs and examples for easy comprehension. The Participants were drawn from North –East and North – West Nigeria, totaling 15 (9 male and 6 female). The training was on Leadership (Shugabanci) and Peace Building (Kafawar Zaman Salama).

Members of the Shendam Community team also experienced the facilitators training which held concurrently with the Hausa Facilitators Training. The SELL Shendam Facilitators Training held in Shendam, Plateau State, Nigeria.  The Shendam’s training was the last for their team in this round of training. Two units of SELL where explored; Wisdom of Traditions and Leadership, with 13 Participants Present. The Facilitators from Shendam Community were so excited because they completed the training in all the six units of the programme. They planned on delivering four workshops before the end of the year. The SELL Resource Team congratulates and wishes them well in their plan. Two members of the SELL Resource Team; Berlyn Boniface and Mary James facilitated the training.

Youth of Miya town, Bauchi State, Nigeria, had an interesting feel of the SELL Programme. The 29 Participants who took part in the programme were very lively and participated with much enthusiasm. The unit Shared there was the Self Awareness. The facilitators were Lucy Emmanuel, a member of the Bauchi SELL Team and Moses Alokpa a Member of the SELL Resource team. The interactive forum held on the 11th – 13th September at Miya. Thanks to the Saint Patrick’s Priest, Fr. Edet who organizied the programme and ensured that it happened.

That weekend was also a weekend slated to work with teachers of St. Paul’s School Guru, in Bauchi. They requested that they experience the Leadership unit of SELL, though 11 in number, they were dumbfounded to know that the SELL Programme’s content was very rich.

The next blog you shall read, will carry the story of the SELL facilitators training of the SELL Jos Team, and the SELL Workshops currently taking place in Lagos.

Please remember to search the hash tag “#SeptemberIsOurMonthInSell” on Facebook to view complete photos of the September programme.

Have a Blessed week.

You are welcome to this week’s update on our blog. Last week we reported that Jonathan, a pioneer Team Leader of the Resource Team and now a Resource member will be taking his beloved, Cynthia to the church for a Christian wedding. Am glad to report to you that the event took place on 5th September, 2015, where the duo pledged their love and fidelity to each other, till death do them part. It was such a lively occasion, in the sunny town of Makurdi, North Central, Nigeria as both families rejoiced and celebrated with their children. Many priests, friends and well wishers of Jonathan and Cynthia from Bauchi, Lagos and other parts of Nigeria, including the Resource team represented by Moses F. Alokpa, Mary James and John Jiddere graced the occasion. We wish Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Ekhator the best of family life.

Also last week, the third and final mentoring training for SELL mentors took place in Jos, North central, Nigeria. A total of 14 mentees attended the training, which was facilitated by Fr. Emmanuel Edet, a priest of St. Patrick’s society and Sr. Magret, a Sister of the Holy Child Jesus. Given that it was the last training for them as Mentors, it took a retreat format where they evaluated the journey so far, the successes and challenges and of course how they will overcome such challenges in future. All the issues raised were brought to God in prayers and the training closed with the commissioning of the mentees to go into the field and mentor their peers who are facilitating the SELL programme.

This week, the final training for Shendam community trainees will take place. Also, this week, the 2nd training for Hausa language facilitators of the SELL programme will take place at the Youth Formation Centre in Bauchi. As at the time of this report, both trainings have actually started. We shall bring you the details next week. Other activities scheduled for this week end include, Self Awareness Workshop with the youths of Miya community in Bauchi and Leadership workshop for Teachers of St. Paul’s School Guru, also in Bauchi.

Upcoming events:
September, 15
th - 20th SELL Training for Jos Community Trainees.

September, 18th – 25th Workshop for youths of Kirikiri and Amukoko Communities in Lagos, South west, Nigeria. Join us on this page next week as we give you more updates on activities of the SELL Foundation.

Thanks,
Moses.

TWO TEAMS OF SELL FACILITATORS COMPLETED THEIR TRAININGS

9/5/2015

On Wednesday 25th August 2015, four members of the SELL Resource Team (Berlyn, John, Moses and Mary) travelled to Jalingo in Taraba State for final training of SELL facilitators.  The training was for Yola and Jalingo team. The Yola training held in Jalingo because the team had a challenge with venue.  We thank the Jalingo team whom through the support of their Youth chaplain (Fr. Anthony Hanya) played host to the Yola Team. The chaplain participated in some of the sessions of the training as well. There we had training on Leadership for Jalingo Team and Justice for Yola Team separately with 2 facilitators for each team. Yola Training recorded 11 participants while 14 participants took part in the Jalingo training. The above trainings were done between 25th and 27th August, 2015.

As from 28th-30th August, 2015,  both groups came together for Wisdom of Traditions training given that, this was the last Unit of SELL for both teams to receive training on. The trainees were moved by the participatory approach of SELL and reflections on the units explored.  Some of the sessions are: Implications of traditions and practices that have changed over time as a result of modernization, Experience of Leadership Authority and power, News Paper analysis, Sexuality, etc. According to comments gathered from their evaluation, they were glad that the processes enabled them to share honestly and freely with one another and get in touch with their life experiences. They were also enthusiastic and encouraged by the facilitators to share their experience with others in their communities. The essence of the training is for them to pass on the message to others. In the same vein, Mr.  Divine Akawu (the provincial President of CYON in Jos ecclesiastical province) reiterated the commitment of CYON to supporting SELL Programme in the Jos Province. He added that, the trainees should work in cooperation with CYON as partners in fostering Peace and progress in the church and their communities.

In the quest to reach out for more young adults, an action plan was drawn by both teams to run step down workshops on units they have been trained on. The Workshop shall take place in LCCN church groups and Catholic Church groups due to the fact that the trainees were drawn from both churches.

It was indeed a worthwhile experience given that both participants and facilitators were happy about the programme and three units of SELL Programme was explored within a week. The training ended on Saturday evening but it was late for participants that came from afar to travel, so we passed the night at the Pastoral Centre Jalingo and returned to our respective areas by Sunday 30th August, 2015. The trainings for Jalingo and Yola were climaxed with sweet memories and gratitude. We appreciate the Jalingo team for given the SELL Resource Team a thank you gift of a frame and Card.

We hope that, the step down workshops will help further our desire of bringing people of different faiths and denominations together in making the programme more inclusive.
