The third Provincial training of facilitators for the Sharing Education and Learning for Life Programme (SELL) is kicking off today. This training is going to take place at the Pastoral Centre Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. Leo and Jonathan of the SELL Resource Team and four members of the Bauchi Local Team left this morning to the venue of the workshop. Other Trainees are also expected to arrive on Friday, 9th September, 2011. The training is going to last for 8 days and departure will be on Sunday 18th September, 2011.

The SELL programme has six units, during the first and second training; the Participants received training on four units: Personal Growth, Leadership, Spirituality and Peace Building. This time around, we hope to train participants on the Community Building and Social Justice Units of the SELL Programme. Update on this training shall be brought to you in our subsequent edition of the blog.

You will recall that I informed you our there reader, that these workshops are some of our upcoming events. Am glad to inform you that the Workshops didn’t just commence on the said dates but was indeed wonderful. One of the Workshops was organised and hosted by the Students of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (A.T.B.U) Bauchi State, Nigeria. The workshop was on the Five core keys of Effective Leadership (Leadership unit of the SELL Programme). It stared at 4pm on Friday, 2nd September and close at 6pm. The Workshop continued on Saturday 8:00am and lasted till 3pm. The learnings gathered by the students from the evaluation of the workshops were: leadership is more of one’s disposition rather than occupying a position; leadership requires patience and hard work and lastly to adopt the Communal Method of Leadership was a challenge. 27 Participants were in attendance; 6 were Female while 21 of them were male. Moses of the SELL Resource Team and I facilitated the workshop. It was a great weekend with the University Students; our efforts were highly appreciated with the students left earning for more workshops.

On that same weekend, workshop was organised and hosted at the Centre for Youth Development at Kabba, Kogi state, North Central, Nigeria (where the SELL Resource Team started the Programme). The workshop was held for the young adults from selected clubs and associations in Kabba. Given that they were leaders of their various groups, the five core keys for effective leadership was also delivered to them. They were 8 ladies and 15 male, total 23.

This week, precisely on 7th September, 2011, the meeting of the Bauchi youth chaplains and stakeholders took place at the Youth Formation Centre, Bauchi. Present at the meeting were the Diocesan Youth chaplain and President, Chaplain for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Bauchi and his Gombe state counterpart. Also, in attendance were Leo, Jonathan and Moses of the SELL team. The meeting reviewed the activities of the SELL team from January to August, 2011. It also looked into the future of the SELL programme and the Youth Formation Centre. Leo is to see the Bishop of Bauchi soonest and brief him of the outcome of the meeting. I hope he will  stop here.

UPCOMING EVENTS Meeting with the Nigerian Leadership of CAFOD on 19th September, 2011.

Wishing you all our Muslim brothers and Sisters Allah’s Grace, Mercies, Peace Blessings and Favor and May the Spirit of the Sallah celebrations bring Peace to the whole world. Happy Eid-ul Fitr!

In the last edition of this blog, Moses informed you that Azare youths have participated in five units of the Sharing Education and Learning for Life SELL Programme. Am here to keep you posted with the updates.

On the 26th -27th August, 2011. Pius and I delivered the outstanding last unit of the six units of SELL Programme with Azare’s youth, along side Moses of the SELL Resource Team who supported us to facilitate the Workshop. The distance between Azare and Bauchi where the SELL Team runs the Programme from is about 610 miles.

The Workshop started on Friday evening and continues from Saturday morning till 4pm. it was on the Spirituality unit of the SELL Programme. 32 Participants were in attendance. 18 were female while 14 of them were male. These comprised of mostly newcomers, who were participating for the first time in the SELL programme. From the evaluation of the unit, participants admitted that; Participatory method is better than the Teacher-students method of teaching as it enables all to air out their views and be listened to. They expressed the need to make critical thinking/analyses before making conclusions especially on a religion different from theirs. For them, the Spirituality unit of SELL was a great learning and the call to love and respect other creatures and Religion is a challenge.

Azare youths are the first group of Young Adults that have taken all the six units of the SELL Programme in Northern Nigeria. Having participated in the six units, they requested that one of them be trained as a facilitator of the SELL Programme. We on the SELL Resource Team Congratulate them. May the richness and inspiration of the programme manifest in their lives.

Jonathan and Leo have completed work with the young adults of Ghana. We wish them journey mercies as the duo will all be in Nigeria by this weekend.
