May the grace of our creator God be upon you as we come your way with updates for the month of April. We appreciate you for showing interest in our activities by following us and reading our monthly updates. We trust that you are doing well in all your endeavours.
Having resumed work on the 4th following the Easter break, the Team was in Wa in the Upper West Region of Ghana for an overview workshop. The purpose of the workshop was to introduce the programme to young people with the key objective of selecting young people capable and willing to share the Programme with their communities to be trained as Volunteer Facilitators. This workshop took place in Wa deanery and in attendance were 29 young adults. Sessions for the overview workshop are taken from three out of the six units of the Programme – Knowing Myself and Transactional Analysis (Self Awareness), Global Community (Community Building) and Role of Leaders in Sex Education (Leadership). It was a successful workshop and participants expressed the desire to have SELL Programme functioning in their communities. The Team was also able to select possible trainees.
The Team had planned earlier on to build the capacity of members and the mentors on Counseling Skills. So the weekend after the Wa workshop the Team together with the mentors were in Kumasi at the Spiritual Renewal Centre for a Counseling Training. In total 15 persons went through the training as SELL Family. We joined other groups whose work also requires counseling skills at the centre. It was such an interesting encounter, exploring and learning with others. The training is in two sessions of which the one did from the 13th to the 15th was the first. The second session is scheduled to take place from 11th to 13th May. Participants were introduced to basic counseling skills and given the opportunity to put those skills into practice by examining Case Studies. On the same weekend one of the Resource Persons on the Team was at Binduri – a community in the Navrongo Bolgatanga Zone – for a workshop on the Peace Building Unit of the Programme. 16 young adults participated in that workshop.
From the 20th to the 22nd of the month the Team had workshops at Bawku and Bolgatanga Polytechnic. The workshop in Bawku was on the Peace Building Unit. A total of 19 young people were encountered and they expressed their gratitude to the authors of the programme for the learnings they had from the workshop. They said the Unit in particular was helpful to them as young people in a community affected by conflict. At the Polytechnic the Unit dealt with was Self Awareness. The students were excited that the Programme gives them the opportunity to constantly reflect on themselves in order to better understand themselves in order to make appropriate choices and relate with others well. A total of 22 students participated in the workshop.
On the last weekend of the month there were workshops at Jirapa Deanery in the Upper West Region and Walewale in the Navrongo-Bolgatanga zone. The workshop in Jirapa was an Overview of the Programme the same as the one that was done in Wa on the first weekend of the month. Possible trainees were also selected. The Unit treated in Walewale was Peace Building. It was the first time the Volunteer Facilitators in that community were mentored. A total of 35 young adults actively participated. The participants were grateful to the team for that exposer as they found the interaction very educative.
Apart from the activities in the field, the Resource Team had a meeting with the Link Brother, Bernard, on the 11th of the month. The meeting enabled the whole team to respond to some of the issues raised by the Province Leader of the Presentation Brothers in his response to the minutes of the first ever meeting of the Resource team with the Link Brother. The meeting ended successfully after series of fruitful deliberations.
The Team owe a great debt of appreciation to all the stakeholders of the programme; the Presentation Brothers, the Youth Chaplains, the Volunteer Facilitators and most especially the benefactors for their immeasurable support towards the work of developing young people to effect change and promote peace in their communities.
As the work continues in May, the Team once again appreciate the audience of followers and promise to bring updates at the end of next month.
