Maria for SELL Resource Team
SELL mourns Bishop Malachy the Local Ordinary of the Catholic Diocese of Bauchi. On the wake of Saturday, the first call I got was from a member of the SELL Resource team, and what he called to say was that our Bishop is dead. I almost said, 'wrong number', because I couldn't understand what he was talking about, then I managed to say, "Are you talking to me, is that a joke or something?" He said, "No, Bishop Malachy is gone." I felt like the my apartment just collapsed on my head, then I began to scream and scream and started making calls to confirm. It was true! Recently, we lost Bishop James Daman of Shendam Diocese, now Bishop Malachy of Bauchi diocese, I don't understand what is happening. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed through; the mercy of God rest in peace.

This is not an exaggeration but for real, that the SELL Community team in Jos, Plateau State, reached 95 persons; 32 female and 63 male. This was when they delivered the SELL Programme last weekend, 7th March, 2015. With SELL, the maximum workable number that two facilitators can manage at a time under a workshop scenario is 45 to 50 persons. The case was different for the workshop in Jos last weekend; 95 persons were in attendance and 4 facilitators with 2 other facilitators supporting with logistics as the workshop went on. The group that experienced the SELL Programme was the executives of the Catholic Youth Organization of the Catholic Metropolitan Arch Diocese of Jos. The SELL Unit explored with the group was the Leadership unit, thi was to prepare them for the task ahead. Some of the insights and quotes that came up during the workshop were; The need to clarify the values that will guide a group. Values are basis for governing ones/group’s decisions and behaviors. As a leader, the greatest source of your power comes from your character; the more others trust you the more power you will have. Understand that leadership is not a formal position, it is a relationship SELL Resource team wish to appreciate the SELL Community Facilitators in Jos for this great work, we pray that the impart of the SELL Programme the young people experienced will be felt in their lives, families and communities. More so as the 2015 general elections in Nigeria draws close, our earnest desire is that young people will not compromise their votes and their future but vote in credible persons into leadership positions. FROM KUMASI, GHANA The SELL Team in Kumasi, Ghana, had their first meeting in 2015. Hagar the team leader shared with the Resource team the outcome of the meeting. When the vision of the SELL Programme was conceived, it was piloted in Kabba at the Human Development Centre. In 2007, the SELL Programme relocated from Kabba to Bauchi. The good news is that since the relocation, the SELL Facilitators there have continue to run the SELL Programme in Kabba and environs. Recently, two SELL Programmes were delivered in Kabba, Below is a breakdown of the workshops: February 20th - 21st, Taiye Mofolorunsho, a SELL Facilitator from Kabba gave us a report of the workshop with the youths of Korede area of Kabba Town. This programme started on Monday 2nd – Wednesday 4th March, 2015. The focus of the programme is to offer capacity building on how to work effectively in teams, other focus was on relational dynamics as well as the need to balance the task and relationship need of their team. We like to appreciate Taiye, Fr. Ogunleye and Jonathan for the huge work they did by running the SELL Programme. SELL LEADERS MEETING IN THE NORTH-EAST AND PLATEAU STATE The Leaders of SELL in the North East of Nigeria and Plateau State all convened at the Youth Formation Centre where the SELL Programme works from. The reason for their coming together was for a meeting with the members of the SELL Resource team. Some of the Agenda for the meeting were on; the forth coming Annual General Reflection (AGR); reports from the various community teams and outcome of SELL Resource team’s evaluation. Other issues that formed the Agenda are; the importance of Data collection after each workshop as well as stepping down workshops after each training. The issue of the current security challenges faced in the North east Nigeria and the tension of the forth coming national elections was not overlooked because the success of our work in the North east is partly dependent on a relatively calm and peaceful environment. TRAINING AND WORKSHOPS The following happened since after the last blog; Bauchi/Gombe community team came to continue with the SELL Training which they have started in the previous years. This was the 4th and 5th training and 15 persons took part in it. The units for the training were the Peace Building and Justice units of SELL. These two units are closely knitted in the sense that we can only have a peaceful society if justice and fairness prevails. The Training was facilitated by Moses and Maria of the Resource Team. On the 7th March, a meeting of the SELL Resource Team with SELL Beneficiaries in Bauchi/Gombe took place at the Youth Formation Centre, Bauchi. The purpose of the meeting was on the sustainability of SELL and continued support to beneficiaries of SELL in Bauchi and Gombe States.
We appreciate you all who have contributed in making our work in February 2015 a success; we look forward to greater time together in this month of March and beyond. In our next blog, you shall be reading about the SELL programme that was delivered in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria and other stories.
