TRAINING
The Journey of a thousand miles, they say begins with a step. On the faithful morning of 27th July 2014, the trio of; Berlyn, Beji and Mary from the SELL Resource Team started the journey to Kumasi, Ghana from Bauchi state, Nigeria, where the resource room of SELL is located. According to the facilitators, the journey was so stressful because some part of the road they traveled on was in its worse state of potholes and damage; other parts of the roads were under construction. Going through the checks on the various borders from Nigeria to Ghana also added to the stress of the journey. At least from Lagos, Nigeria to Accra, Ghana they spent 18hours.
In 2010 to 2012 a set of young Ghanaians were trained as facilitators to deliver the SELL programme in their community. After the training ended in 2012 the need to train more young people arose, this was to create better outreach of the SELL Programme among young people.
The new set of trainees, started their training in 2013 and will conclude hopefully in 2015. The facilitators reported that the 11 trainees, were committed to the training, they showed that by their eagerness to learn, constructive questions they asked and in their strategic plan on how to further run the programme in their community.
Berlyn who was one of the facilitators, shared her experience as thus; “It was indeed a great moment in Ghana for this round of facilitator’s training of SELL. The training started on the 31st July to 8th August 2014 at Kumasi, Ghana. The team explored two units of the SELL Program namely; Peace Building and Wisdom of Tradition. The facilitators were fascinated as each session was carefully explored. Some of the facilitators had this to say;
Agyei Vincent “the Peace building unit has enlighten me on making peace with myself first before I am able to take it out to others and being the change I want to see and doing the little I can do in my own small way to contribute in building peace in my community. And under the wisdom of traditions unit, there is wisdom in every tradition. Owning my faith and tradition and learning about other’s faith tradition too is essential be able to co-exist with them"
Mabel Akurugu “ the Exciting part of this training is exploration of Peace Building unit, I really enjoyed it and realized that there is a need to be at peace with one another”
Armstrong Kusi Appiah “I think we must cooperate with the various faith backgrounds around us and find a reasonable way of expressing our faith and respect other people’s too”
17 participants were in attendance, 7 females and 10 males.

Just after the training in Kumasi, on the 11th August, 2014, Beji, Mary and Berlyn proceeded to Roman Hill Area of Kumasi to work with member of the Street Children Project. They trio worked mainly with the females of the group whose age range was 14 to 25. Components of Self Awareness unit of SELL were shared with the group. It was mainly to help participants reclaim their self worth, build their self esteem, overcome complex issues and have positive regard for self and others. They were all 18 in number.
Just after the training in Kumasi, on the 11th August, 2014, Beji, Mary and Berlyn proceeded to Roman Hill Area of Kumasi to work with member of the Street Children Project. Prior to the training in Kumasi, the SELL Team in Ghana organized two step-down workshops of the previous trainings they had. The first workshop had 5 Facilitators (Wisdom, Kennedy, Denis, Putor and Hagar) delivere the Self Awareness Unit of SELL to youths of Glory Baptist Church, Kumasi. It held on the 7th – 9th July, 2014 and had 14 participants
The second workshop by the Kumasi SELL Facilitators held on the 18th – 19th July 2014. The workshop was on the Leadership and Self Awareness units of SELL, with Students of SMA High School Kumasi. The workshop recorded 20 participants; 9 ladies and 11 gentle men. Vincent, John Kennedy, Bernice, Augustine and Hagar, anchored the programme.
The second workshop by the Kumasi SELL Facilitators held on the 18th – 19th July 2014. The workshop was on the Leadership and Self Awareness units of SELL, with Students of SMA High School Kumasi. CONDOLENCE
With sadness in our hearts we join the kumasi SELL Team to mourn the loss of our beloved priest Fr. Joop Valentine. In 2007, Fr. Valentine invited the SELL Resource Team to Ghana to run the programme with his youths of St. Paul Adukrom Parish. Ever since, the seed of the programme sown has multiplied and now the SELL programme has trained facilitators and some in training. We pray that the soul of Fr. Joop & the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy God rest in peace.
