Sharing Education and Learning for Life Foundation in Nigeria carried out novel climate action activities during the implementation of the 2023 activities which won the Misean Cara Action Award 2023.

The activities involved sourcing, nursing, distribution and planting of indigenous tree species as a way of combating deforestation in the communities. The choice of indigenous trees is a testament to SELL's commitment to the environment, as these trees not only enhance biodiversity but also boast resistance to pests and drought conditions, further underlining their resilience in this arid region.

Smokeless Briquettes: A Sustainable Cooking Solution

In regions where the majority of households rely on charcoal for cooking, deforestation and air pollution become major environmental issues. Understanding the pressing need to address these challenges, SELL Foundation initiated a groundbreaking program to promote the production and use of non-smoking briquettes among local communities.

This initiative is particularly crucial for those who cannot afford cooking gas and depend on charcoal obtained from tree cutting.

The introduction of non-smoking briquettes represents a sustainable alternative to traditional charcoal, as they not only reduce the demand for charcoal but also mitigate the health hazards associated with indoor air pollution.
