SELL STILL THRIVES IN MAIDUGURI AMIDST INSURGENCY

Following our last blog, you were informed that there would be training for facilitators of SELL for two communities. The training happened but it was only for one community not two as intended, this was due to situations beyond our control.

The team that had the training was the Maiduguri Community Team.  Maiduguri is the capital of Borno state Nigeria.  Borno state is one of the states of the North East of Nigeria. It is no longer new on media that the North East of Nigeria is challenged by incessant attacks of insurgents. Borno has been the worst hit since 2010 when the Boko Haram insurgents started violent attacks. It is also the State were 272 Senior High School girls in Chibok town were abducted by the sect this year April. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-27240677. Recently Adamawa and Yobe States (also in the North east of Nigeria) face continuous attacks that have led to so many deaths and others fleeing their home towns to safer abodes. http://streetsofnaija.net/2014/11/boko-haram-borno-adamawa-yobe-may-soon-become-history-if-care-is-not-taken-dep-governor/

Amidst all these chaos, SELL still presents her peace building programme to the young people; encouraging them to be peace makers in all of life’s situation. Our target area for delivering the SELL Programme is majorly North east of Nigeria, we have trained facilitators and those still in training in these places mentioned above. Some of these facilitators are internally displaced persons, which makes our work more evident and challenging. We sincerely seek for the opportunity to organize a trauma healing programme to assist our friends. http://www.nigerianorth.com/fresh-borno-adamawa-attacks-dash-idps-hope-of-returning-to-yobe/

While this restiveness continues, an average young person in Nigeria has this resilience of ‘life goes on’. That was why the young facilitators in training from Maiduguri Community team converged at the Youth Formation Centre Bauchi on the 21st to 26th October 2014 to continue with the training in the SELL Units. They had taken the training in one unit in 2013, while other communities in the North East are undergoing training in the fourth unit. This is due to no fault of theirs, but because of the security challenges experienced in that location. An example was in March 2014 when the SELL Resource Team set out to travel Maduguri for the 2nd training, along the way, they had to return because an attack was launched by the insurgent in one of the suburb towns of the training centre.

This time, the Maiduguri SELL Facilitators came to the SELL office and experienced the training in two units of SELL; Self Awareness and Community Building, of course, some aspects of the Peace Building unit of SELL were highlighted. They were 11 young people in attendance; 1 female and 10 male.

You will be surprised to know that in all of these pandemoniums, the team in Maiduguri where able to deliver 4 SELL Programme workshops within a period of one year.

  • This particular report is coming late, but it is worth mentioning that on May 17 – 18th 2013, 43 youths from Madagali town experienced the Peace Building component of SELL.
  • On the 15th August, 2014, the Peace Building component of SELL was explored with youths of Gulak town, Adamawa State and over 30 young men and women were in attendance.
  • One of the Programmes the Maiduguri SELL Facilitators delivered this year was at Mubi town and it was again the Peace Building unit of SELL that was shared there. Though Mubi , Gulak  and Madagali towns are geographically in Adamawa State, the geography of the SELL Programme, groups them under the Maiduguri SELL community . Recently, in November, the insurgents captured Mubi town, the local hunters recaptured it back after few days.
  • The fourth SELL programme took place on the 6 –7th November, 2014 in Maiduguri town, the Leadership unit was explored and 48 young people were in attendance.
The above mentioned towns have histories of attacks by Boko Haram insurgents.
