Compliments of the season to you all, we are grateful to God for all that happened in the year 2013. Some of the experiences were pleasant while a few others were difficult for us, especially the tragic ones.  For the experiences that were pleasant we will like to have them again in 2014; we had up to 3000 young people who took part in the programmes of SELL in 2013 and it was reasonably balanced among the gender, we hope for a greater outreach in 2014. As for the tragic experience, our hearts are still heavy on the loss of 3 facilitators in training; Alex Matthew from Bauchi SELL Team, Dominic Nege and Markus James both from Jalingo SELL Team. May their souls continue to rest in peace.

The year 2014 has begun on a very good note at the SELL Foundation; our office resumed on the 6th January, we had our first team meeting for the year on the 7th January. It will amaze you to hear that we have had up to 4 programmes already.

The first SELL programme we had was with the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) member, the SERVICOM community development group at our office in Bauchi, Nigeria.  We had a workshop with this same group in December 2013 on the Community Building unit of SELL, and now on January 9, 2014, we shared the Leadership unit with them and recorded 31 participants, 14 of whom were females. Still with the same group, we explored another component (the Justice Unit) of the SELL Programme on the 16th January 2014, with 27 participants. The Justice unit of SELL was critical to the SERVICOM Corp members because the group task or purpose is to help ensure that organizations or people of the nation are served well.

On the 10th January, 2014, members of the SELL Resource Team had their first team life check – in for the year. Team life check – in for the Resource Team has become a tradition and it is done quarterly every year, the importance of this activity to the Resource Team has been understood so well. The focus for this year’s check – in was on how to work effectively as a team among other issues. Currently, the resource team has 4 members and the four of us participated.

Saturday, 11th January 2014 was another busy day for the SELL Resource Team, they engaged the Leaders of the Catholic Church in Wuntin Dada Area of Bauchi State, Nigeria in the Leadership programme of SELL. The focus was on the five core Keys for effective Leadership, and 18 Leaders attended. From their discussions, the leaders saw that a lot need to be done in the area of communication channel, delegation of responsibilities, discharging of duties and so on. They now realize that leadership is a collaborative venture and not a business for one person.

The SELL Foundation has facilitators in training; some have completed the training in the 6 units of the programme, while others are still taking the training. Before now, the Resource Team, Usually go round our target areas to mentor these facilitators whenever they are delivering workshops in their communities. It wasn’t easy then because that meant mentoring over 150 facilitators, at different locations within the north east of Nigeria. Sometimes, workshop clashes and the Resource team will have to plead that the workshops be rescheduled so that they can go round for the mentoring. It was just a very tasking thing to do, then the idea to set up a criteria and select those who meet the criteria and train them as mentors came up, so from each community team, one or two mentors have been selected. These mentors have taken two trainings to develop their capacity and help them with ideas so as to mentor other facilitators in training during SELL workshops. After taking two mentoring training, they requested for an opportunity to experience a retreat, a programme that will nourish their spiritual lives. Their request was considered and a Resource person Fr. Pat Murphy who has directed the retreats of the SELL Resource Team was invited to direct the mentors’ retreat. The date for the retreat is January 16th – 19th, 2014, this includes arrival and departure dates.

Lastly, a group of singles from Bauchi town will be participating in a SELL Programme tagged “A day with the singles”, on the 18th January, 2014, a report of this programme shall be brought to you in our next blog.

Take care and have a lovely weekend.

Maria (Mhishap)
