There was a first set of trained mentors of SELL, this first set has completed their training and are now working effectively, supporting trainee facilitators as they deliver the SELL Programme in their various communities. We thank God that SELL is growing and more mentors are needed, because of this need, the Foundation started a second phase of training, the two set of mentors are to work together to achieve the aim. This training took place on the 16 – 19th October, 2014 at the Youth Formation Centre, Bauchi, Nigeria, with 15 participants.

CENTRAL LEADER OF ST. PATRICK’S MISSIONARY SOCIETY VISITS SELL RESOURCE TEAM

Tuesday, 21st October 2014, will forever be a memorable day to the SELL Resource Team. Memorable because the Resource Team played host to the Central Leader of the St. Patrick’s Missionary Society (SPMS); Fr Victor Dunne. What I mean by Central Leader is, the worldwide Leader of SPMS. Though SPMS do not work in hierarchy but in teams, it is appropriate to say that he is a member of the Central Leadership Team. Fr. Victor was elected into office with other team members in June 2014.

He came to Nigeria to visit the SPMS mission areas and of course SELL is a strong ally/partner of SPMS, therefore, he used the opportunity to visit SELL Foundation. It will be good to share with you too our reader that the authors of the SELL programme Frs. Leo Traynor, Noel McGeeney and Tommy Hayden are members of SPMS. During Fr. Victor’s visit, he met with the SELL Resource Team which they shared with him the overview of SELL, time line as from 2007-date. Of course SELL’s vision into the future, hopes and challenges were also shared with him. He responded on the affirmative that SELL will always have the support of the SPMS during their time of leadership.

DISCOVER YOUR POTENTIAL

On the 1st October 1960, Nigeria a country in the sub – Saharan Africa gained Independence from her British colonial masters. This is 54 years of independence, Nigerian nationals are very optimistic that the situation of things will get better as the country is currently faced with security challenges, unemployment and so on. To say that 33.1% of Nigerians are living below the poverty line is not an exaggeration (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poverty_in_Nigeria). Every Nigerian has a part to play in making Nigeria a better place, more so, youths are seen as agents of change everywhere. To contribute to making this change possible, the SELL Resource team did not go for the public holiday that is marked for the Independence, but committed to working with youths on that day. Students of Abubakar Tafawa Belewa University (ATBU), Bauchi experienced the SELL Programme, titled; ‘Discover Your Potential’. It was indeed an awesome experience as 48 students participated in the programme. One of the learning from that programme was that when people unleash and maximize their potential they can become useful to themselves and their community.

SELL COMMUNITY LEADERS MEETING

Leaders of SELL community team in the North-East and Plateau State of Nigeria convened for a meeting at the SELL Foundation office on the 27th October 2014. The meeting with the leaders is bi-annual and this was the last for this year. All the communities were represented and vital issues for the growth of SELL were. Indeed the challenges that SELL is faced with were not left out in the discussions, we look up to the creator for grace in all we do.

AN EXPERIENCE ON ‘STRENGTH BASED LIVING; CHOOSING HAPPINESS’

The SELL Foundation hugely appreciates the St. Patricks Missionary Society in Nigeria, west African region, for her immense contribution towards youth formation and development. Over the years, the SELL Foundation has benefited from their generosity. Most recently, they invited an expert facilitator on Child Safeguarding; Fr. Hugh Legan of the Society Missionary of Africa (SMA). Fr. Legan is from Northern Ireland and works in South Africa. The primary focus of the experience was on living positively; being optimistic; having cheerful countenance; knowing what makes you happy; living your life not someone else’ life (doing what you know how to do best); being honest with yourself…. . I can go on and on and on. I will like to share some of my insights which include;

 Getting comes from giving;

 The happiest people are people who give freely without looking back;

 Happiness is a conscious choice not an automatic response;

Don’t let your dream become so self-focused, consider the need of others as well;

Be careful what you pray for because you may actually get it (an Irish Proverb);

We spend too much of our lives correcting our deficiencies than building our strengths;

Spend time each day in silence to gain perspectives and we cannot be anything we desire to be than who we already are.

 On the child safe guarding aspect, it was so disheartening knowing that at least 18 percent of females and 8 percent of males are being abused at a young age. Also sad to know that child abuse is carried out more by close persons in the lives of these young ones, the whole experience shared by Legan was worthwhile. The programme took place at the Catholic Social Centre in Kaduna, Nigeria on the 6th October, 2014.
