Have you ever thought of beautiful scenery surrounded by rocks and green vegetation even in the dry season? Miya, a small community in Ganjuwa Local Government area of Bauchi State, in Nigeria, is a typical example of such. Though the warm breeze in the atmosphere was slightly uncomfortable, two members of the SELL Team Moses and Maria found their way to Miya for a Hausa workshop on Personal Growth unit of the SELL Programme. The workshop, which took place at the Catechetical Training Centre, on Wednesday the 17th to Thursday the 18th of March  2010, was organized by Sr. Colette Corvin SSL for the Catechist of Bauchi Diocese. The Catechists were divided into two groups. The workshop was held with the first group and there were a total of 14 catechists were in attendance. The workshop for the second group hopefully on the 18th of March 2010 .The participants were a lively set of people whose participation was tremendous and one could easily say they are a group to work with again if given the opportunity. Issues that were discussed at the workshop were basically on self awareness with the most challenging on Human Sexuality. The Catechists, who are also parents, said it will be difficult for them to educate their children, most especially the female children, on their sexuality since they are male parents, and still from the group someone responded that such responsibilities could be taken upon by the female parents. The SELL Team left the group with challenging statements such as: “If you don’t educate your children about their sexuality another person will,” and that “it is easier to train a child than to repair an adult”.

One other workshop took place on the 19th-21st of February at Federal Polytechnic Damaturu, Yobe state, Nigeria, West Africa. Moses and Leo facilitated part of the Personal Growth unit of the SELL Programme and met 70 Participants. One of the greatest challenges of the young adults at that workshop was how to put what they have learnt about healthy relationships into practice. They also expressed gratitude to the Team for helping them with the skills to grow in self awareness and interpersonal relationships. The Team was impressed by the participation of especially a teaching staff, Mr. Victor, one of the Patrons of the Nigeria Federation of Catholic Students, FedPoly, Damaturu.

The SELL Team is not only concerned with delivering the 6 units, but has met some resource persons to share the SELL vision with and also integrate their ideas into the SELL Programme. On Thursday 11th February 2010 Leo and Jonathan of the SELL Team met with Sani Suleiman of the Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) Jos. The duo tendered a request to him on the Team’s desire to engage in some studies on Islam if the opportunity avails itself, because their work cuts across other faith beliefs. Mr. Sani was very receptive and showed openness to that, he gave his words to assist us with some basic Islamic knowledge when the time comes. Still on contacts, Fr. Leo met with Sr. Helena of an interfaith group in Jos Plateau State of Nigeria, Leo Discussed about our Programme with her and how her interfaith group could be helpful to the SELL Programme and still achieve our respective or common goals.

The month of February is coming to an end and we will say January and February has being very fair to us. Let’s see what March will come with. In March the SELL Team will be visiting Billiri community in Gombe state, St. Mary’s parish Jos and Bajoga community in Bauchi for Leadership, Personal Growth and Peace building units of the SELL Programme respectively, aside other schedules, appointments and meetings.  We will give you details of all in due time.

Aside delivering workshops, the SELL Team has a social life they live and in view of that, the train will be taking them to Maria’s home on Monday the 1st of March 2010 for a Team social gathering which Maria will be hosting and before the end of the year the SELL Team must have gone round all the team members houses for such visits. We will give you a run down of our activities as they come. Thanks for being with us.

       Maria,

       For the SELL Team.
