............BECAUSE WOMEN ARE EQUALLY IMPORTANT AS MEN

8/25/2012

Hello all, it feels good to be with you again this week on our blog.

Last week I informed you that we will be working with some young adults in the Central part of Bauchi town, Bauchi state, Nigeria. Moses and I both members of the Sharing Education and Learning for Life (SELL) Resource Team, worked with that group on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th August 2012.

The unit of the SELL Programme that we shared with the Young Adults was the Community Building unit.

According to the participants, the sessions on Identity and Role of Women in the Community were the most challenging to them.

On identity, the participants got as an insight that every culture is unique and everything people do in their culture has an origin and a reason behind it. The challenge is that we should have positive regard for what we see people do in their culture other than condemn their practices. In addition, some participants said it will be good to ask people questions to know why they are engaged in certain practices. On the role of women in our community, they discovered that women carry a triple burden of work and the society demands a lot from women. Some male participants in the end said most of the work women do could be shared with the men too, because women are equally important as men.

Participants at the programme were 16 in number, (10 women and 6 men).

I also informed you in our last edition of the blog that we will give a report on the Team Building Programme Jonathan and Mary of the SELL Resource Team held with staff of the Street Children Project (SCP) in Kumasi, Ghana.

The Street Children Project belongs to the Catholic Archdiocese of Kumasi and managed by the Daughters of Charity (DC).

Rev. Sr. Olivia (DC), who is the Director of SCP heard of the SELL Programme in Kumasi and using the opportunity of the SELL Facilitators on ground, organised a one day Team Building programme for the staff of the project.

Eugene and Bernice of the Kumasi SELL Team accompanied Mary and Jonathan and together they facilitated the programme.

The day began with the draw your fire process which helped the staff to get in touch with their motivations and how these passions drive them to work for SCP. This was then followed with a deeper exploration of the visions and missions of the project.

At the end of the day, the staff were very appreciative. They expressed gratitude to the SELL Team for supporting them with the Team Building Programme. They said the workshop has helped them to clarify more the vision and mission of the project, while also giving them some skills around working together as a team.

We are grateful to sr. Olivia for giving us the opportunity to work with SCP

Jonathan and Mary are back from Ghana. The duo went to train facilitators of the SELL Programme in Kumasi. We are glad to have them back in the office.

The SELL Team in Jos has organised a SELL Programme for young Adults at Abattoir area of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. The programme is holding this weekend, 24th and 25th August 2012. The focus of the Programme in Jos is on the Wisdom of Traditions unit of SELL.

Members of the SELL Team in Jos are; Grace, Alex, Hilda and Beji. We wish them well as they facilitate the programme this weekend.

Hope to bring to you more report on the SELL Programme next week,  meanwhile, enjoy our pictures from the SELL Programmes that took place in Ghana and other pictures.

A REPORT ON THE THIRD TRAINING OF SELL FACILITATORS IN KUMASI, AND OTHER STORIES

8/17/2012

In 2010, the Sharing Education and Learning for Life (SELL) Programme started training some young adults in Kumasi as facilitators of the SELL Programme.

The training in 2010 was done in August and two out of the six units of the Programme were the focus of the training.  The two units were; Personal Growth (Self Awareness) and Leadership.

The second training happened in December 2011 and the trainees received training in yet another two units of the programme which were Spirituality (Wisdom of traditions) and Peace Building.

Recently, the Justice and Community Building units of the programme were explored with the trainees. Jonathan a member of the SELL resource team who is one of the facilitators at the training gave this report on the training;

“The third training of SELL facilitators in Kumasi, Ashanti region of Ghana ended on Thursday the 9th of August, 2012.

18 young people took part in the training, which was the third in the series. The training was facilitated by Mary and I.

The Two units covered in the training among other processes were the Community Building and the Justice Unit of the SELL programme.

The venue was the Seminary College of the Missionaries of Africa at Ejisu in Kumasi.

We like to say a sincere thank you to Rev. Fr. Emmanuel the Director and to all staff of the college for their hospitality.

The SELL team is also very grateful to Fr. Augustine Ndah of the SMA for his support to the Young People who took part in the training.

At the end of the training, the young people committed to sharing the SELL programme with other youths in Kumasi. To this effect they put together a strategic plan of how they are going to do this and share roles and responsibilities among themselves to see to the implementation of the plans that they have made.

We are very impressed with the improvements and the work that they have done over the years. We thank all those who have supported the SELL programme to make this happen.

On Tuesday the 14th of August, we had a team building workshop with the staff of the Daughters of Charity, street children project in Kumasi”.

I would  like to appreciate all those that have supported the Facilitators and Participants (Trainees) and everyone that has done something, little or mighty to make the SELL Ghana Project successful. God bless you all!

On the 10th -11th August 2012, Hilary and I went to Fadaman Mada area of Bauchi town, and led an interactive forum of the SELL Programme with a focus on the Wisdom of Traditions’ unit.

The programme recorded about 10 Participants. The turn-out was low and the organisers apologised that they tried their best in the publicizing about the programme but some of those that were expected to attend couldn’t come because most of them were attending to their commercial businesses and others travelled out of town. Well on our part the facilitators, we were not discouraged because we know that sometimes things like this could happen.

Despite the challenge, we still ran through the sessions with the group and I tell you it was not a time wasted because the Participants were very engaging and felt happy that we came.

A member of the SELL Resource Team Moses who went for short term training on International Civilian Peace building Training (IPT) is back. Moses took part in the Core course and the specialization course on Conflict Transformation. The venue of the training was the Austrian Study Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution (ASPR), StradSchailining, Austria. We all joyfully welcome him back.

We are also expecting Mary and Jonathan in this coming week from Ghana. We wish them safe journey back and when they come we shall share with you some of the photographs from the training and give you a report of the team building workshop with the staff of the Daughters of Charity, Street children project in Kumasi, Ghana.

This weekend, 17th -18th August 2012, Moses and I are working with young adults in the central area of Bauchi town, Bauchi state, Nigeria. The unit of the programme we will be sharing with these Young Adults is the Community Building unit of SELL.

Lastly, on the 19th and 20th is the Eid il Fitr (Sallah) celebration by our Muslim brothers and sisters the world over. We wish all of them a Peaceful festival.

See you again next week with more updates of our programme. Have a wonderful weekend.

Happy new month to you all, how blessed are we to be part of it. When I looked at my calendar this morning I was surprised that we are already in the eight month of the year, see how time flies.

As the time is moving fast, we also in the Sharing Education and Learning for Life (SELL) Programme are making great successes with our work. Starting from January to July 2012, nearly all the weekends, SELL Programmes were conducted in different locations in Nigeria and also in Ghana.

I want to attribute the successes of all the SELL Programmes that were held to all our benefactresses and benefactors, also to the facilitators who coordinated or anchored the various Programmes. And to all those that participated, without you there wouldn’t have been any programme and finally to all those that continuously pray for the SELL Programme. Thanks and God bless you all!!!

All is now set as Jonathan and Mary of the SELL Resource Team have travelled to Kumasi in the Ashanti region of Ghana for the third training of facilitators of the SELL Programme. The first training took place in August 2010 and at that time, two units of the SELL Programme; Personal Growth and Leadership were explored and 16 young Adults both Christians and Muslims formed the participants. The second training was in December 2011, only 9 out of the first 16 trainees continued with the training, 3 new persons joined the 9 making a total of 12 trainees in all, other trainees who couldn’t make it for the training absent because of transfers and others were writing examinations in their schools.   The units of the SELL Programme that they received training on during the second training were the Spirituality and Peace Building units of the SELL Programme.

This third training is scheduled for 1st – 9th August 2012, at Ejesu, Kumasi, Ghana. Like before, the participant are of mixed faiths; Christians and Muslims. The units they are being trained on are the Justice and the Community Building units of the SELL Programme.

Details of this training will come to you soon.

See you next week
