Last week I informed you that we will be working with some young adults in the Central part of Bauchi town, Bauchi state, Nigeria. Moses and I both members of the Sharing Education and Learning for Life (SELL) Resource Team, worked with that group on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th August 2012.
The unit of the SELL Programme that we shared with the Young Adults was the Community Building unit.
According to the participants, the sessions on Identity and Role of Women in the Community were the most challenging to them.
On identity, the participants got as an insight that every culture is unique and everything people do in their culture has an origin and a reason behind it. The challenge is that we should have positive regard for what we see people do in their culture other than condemn their practices. In addition, some participants said it will be good to ask people questions to know why they are engaged in certain practices. On the role of women in our community, they discovered that women carry a triple burden of work and the society demands a lot from women. Some male participants in the end said most of the work women do could be shared with the men too, because women are equally important as men.
Participants at the programme were 16 in number, (10 women and 6 men).
I also informed you in our last edition of the blog that we will give a report on the Team Building Programme Jonathan and Mary of the SELL Resource Team held with staff of the Street Children Project (SCP) in Kumasi, Ghana.
The Street Children Project belongs to the Catholic Archdiocese of Kumasi and managed by the Daughters of Charity (DC).
Rev. Sr. Olivia (DC), who is the Director of SCP heard of the SELL Programme in Kumasi and using the opportunity of the SELL Facilitators on ground, organised a one day Team Building programme for the staff of the project.
Eugene and Bernice of the Kumasi SELL Team accompanied Mary and Jonathan and together they facilitated the programme.
The day began with the draw your fire process which helped the staff to get in touch with their motivations and how these passions drive them to work for SCP. This was then followed with a deeper exploration of the visions and missions of the project.
At the end of the day, the staff were very appreciative. They expressed gratitude to the SELL Team for supporting them with the Team Building Programme. They said the workshop has helped them to clarify more the vision and mission of the project, while also giving them some skills around working together as a team.
We are grateful to sr. Olivia for giving us the opportunity to work with SCP
Jonathan and Mary are back from Ghana. The duo went to train facilitators of the SELL Programme in Kumasi. We are glad to have them back in the office.
The SELL Team in Jos has organised a SELL Programme for young Adults at Abattoir area of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. The programme is holding this weekend, 24th and 25th August 2012. The focus of the Programme in Jos is on the Wisdom of Traditions unit of SELL.
