KUMASI TRAINING

9/27/2010

Hi folks, it is my pleasure to resume back to the office after a long time of Leave and work in Ghana. I did not travel alone but with two members of the Sharing Education and Learning for life (SELL) Team, these Team members are Leo and Jonathan.

You remember in our previous editions of the blog we informed you that a facilitators training was going to take place in Kumasi in the Ashanti region of Ghana. I as well read the succinct update Moses wrote about the training while it was on. Let me try to add a little more detail since I experienced the training.

The journey to Ghana started on the 11th August, 2010. when Jonathan and I arrived Accra in the evening, then Jonathan said to me “Maria you have to change your time” and I asked him what he meant by that having told me earlier on to change my money, I said how many things do I need to change before I live in Ghana? So I adjusted the time on my watch and cell phone GMT i.e to be an hour earlier than the Nigerian time and also change my currency from Naira to Cedi.

,A good friend of the programme, Miss Pickle,s who has been so generous to us and the programme gave us a place in her apartment so we spend the night there and took off to Kumasi the following day together with Leo. At Kumasi we went to meet Fr. Augustine Nda’h SMA our host who received us well. The following day the 13th August 2010, we went to the venue of the training before the participants, we had to check the hall and plan some logistics before their arrival. Around 5pm the Participants for the training started arriving we did the welcoming and all went for supper then we met with the participants for a briefing which lasted for like 30 minutes before we all retired to bed at around 9pm.

The venue for the training was a Formation house for the Missionaries of Africa located at Ejisuman still in the Ashanti region. The venue was such a beautiful environment endowed with beautiful flowers, to summarize it, the serenity of the environment, and the people at St. Martin Formation house, most especially Fr. Emmanuel the Rector were very peaceful and hospitable.

Including arrival and departure dates, the training was scheduled for 10 days. On the whole we had 16 participants for the training, 2 of whom were Muslims, Manaf and Nyass. The training was on two units, Leadership and Personal Growth units, of the SELL programme. The training was not so tiring to us because the 16 participants had experienced all the units of the programme in previous workshops. Though they said the facilitators training is more thorough than attending the SELL workshop, we challenged them to see themselves now as facilitators not as participants because they have to be open to understanding the issues  before they will be able to deliver workshops in future.

The high point of activities at the training was group presentations by the participants who were shared into groups and given topics to study and present before the whole group, this was aimed to improve their confidence in presentation as they will be doing this when they go to deliver workshops after the training. They did very well in their various presentations, the facilitators Jonathan Leo and I encouraged them by giving them some feedback on how their presentation was and on how they can improve.

While we were reading the end of workshop evaluation, we got a sense that they have learnt how to give feedback appropriately among other insights. That proper feedback is not meant to hurt the receiver and it is about what the receiver can do something about. The training ended on the 22nd August, 2010.

Just a day after the training Jonathan and I took off to Cape Coast Region of Ghana and we visited the Cape Coast castle where our ancestors were shipped as slaves by their Slave masters to Europe. We also went for photos at the Elmina castle a similar Castle to that of Cape coast. The experience was quiet historic for us. On Wednesday the 25th August we made our way back to Kumasi to prepare for mentoring of workshop with the new trainees. The workshops were going to be delivered in two parishes, Sacred Heart Akatago and Corpus Christi both in Kumasi. The workshops over all was a success, the trainees did the facilitation of the workshop at both parishes. Jonathan and Leo mentor one group and I did the other.

The Trio, Jonathan, Leo and I left Kumasi on Sunday the 29th August, 2010 to Accra. On the 30th August we went on a tour at the beach in Accra, it was so beautiful to be in touch with the Atlantic Ocean, we also went to the tomb of the first President of Ghana Dr. kwame Nkurmah and a lot of other tourist sites.

BACK IN NIGERIA

When we came back to Nigeria, we had to resume work in earnest and also ease the work we left in the office for Moses and Noel. We also had to start planning for the SELL workshop at Jalingo and Gombe where the team went to mentor the Jos Provincial trainees as they delivered the workshop. The numbers of participants were 60 at Jalingo and 24 in Gombe and the unit of the programme that was run was Personal Growth and Peace Building Respectively.

UPCOMING EVENTS

This weekend 18th-19th September2010, the whole resource Team are going for mentoring at Shendam, Gombe and Maiduguri,  Leo and I, Moses, then Jonathan and Noel are going to these places respectively.

We on the resource team want to wish the facilitators delivering this workshops good luck as they prepare and deliver the workshop and to you our teaming readers enjoy these photos and stay with us on this blog.

Maria,
For the SELL Team.
