THE SELL PROGRAMME HOLDS ITS THIRD FACILITATORS TRAINING IN BAUCHI

The 3rd Bauchi Diocesan SELL Facilitators Training has come and gone. The Training took place at the Youth Formation Centre in Bauchi ,from  the 9th to 18th April. Though the Training is tagged ‘Bauchi SELL Facilitators Training’, the participants came not only from Bauchi but other places like Kabba, Kogi State, Minna, Niger State, Abuja and Kaduna.

Before this third Training, the participants had had two trainings. The first training was in April 2009, on the Personal Growth and Leadership Units of the SELL Programme. During the Second training, which took place in September 2009, the Participants got trained in two other units of the SELL Programme,  Spirituality and Peace Building. This most recent training, covered the last two of the six units which are: Community Building and Social Justice.

A lot happened during the training. Members of the group had already met each other in the first and second trainings so bonding the group was not difficult, and assimilation was improved compared to the previous trainings. The first unit that was treated with the group for this third training was Community Building. We created  a mind map on the word COMMUNITY. A mind map is a tool that is used to explore words, ideas or issues that are related to a particular subject. This tool helped us to come up with the various components of a community.

We also did a work on identity and the exploration of perspectives we saw how people had different perceptions and misperceptions on some cultures, religions, attitudes, beliefs, etc. The issue of gender equality was raised, and we listed out the roles of women in society, and asked the participants to imagine a community where all the women went away for a month and the men were left alone with the children. We all saw the rigor of work that women are engaged in doing and how the care for the home and children is mainly done by women.

The Social Justice unit has a symbol of a “question mark” which is always calling us to think and ask questions on social, religious and societal issues. The Social Justice units also challenged participants to be gender sensitive and inclusive in their language for example ‘humankind’ can be use instead of ‘mankind’. We saw how women are oppressed in various facets of life like religion, cultural, political and social.

The training culminated in a trip to Gubi Dam in Bauchi for a picnic. The number of trainees that took part were 12 while Leo, Jonathan and Moses did the facilitation. Certificates were given to those trainees that completed the 6 units of the SELL Programme, others will be given in due course.

Three of the trainees of the SELL Programme gave their comments below:

1. Hello my name is Michael Friday Obinna from Akanu Local Government Area of Enugu State. I came for this training under Minna Diocese. The SELL Programme has given me a sense of belonging and has brought out the better part of me. It has also provided me opportunity to always accept people the way they are, in view of that I can say comfortably now that every person deserves the chance to be the best they can be .

2. I am Jacob Paulus from Boi parish in the Catholic Diocese of Bauchi, Bauchi State. I took part in the just concluded SELL Facilitators Training. The SELL programme has changed my thinking, perception, and attitude and has moulded me into a complete individual i.e. being the change in my church, community, my work place and my country Nigeria. ‘GREAT PROGRAMME FOR THE GREAT YOUNG ADULTS OF OUR NATION’. You need it!!!

3. When I look at the issue of attitudes, values, personality and character build-up that is lacking in our society today, I must confess that the SELL programme blow my mind concerning these amazing issues. Emmanuel F. Baba St. Michael Catholic Church Army Barracks, Bauchi State.

This is the highlight of the SELL Facilitator’s training.

We will bring to you more on our updates. So stay with us.
